The design of a gas turbine engine is a complex process involving multiple engineers or groups of engineers working on separate sub-systems and components. Typically the design process for each sub-system is performed in isolation with design constraints defined at component interfaces. Such an approach can lead to a sub-optimal design as improvements in one sub-system can often not be realised due to constraints on that system from its neighbours. The following PhD studentship, fully funded by Rolls-Royce Plc., aims to develop methodologies to efficiently assess and manage the impact of component design changes at the whole engine level thereby reducing the need for such constraints at component interfaces leading to an improved system design with a reduction in design effort. The successful candidate should have a 1st class engineering or applied mathematics degree, ideally with experience of one or more of design optimisation algorithms, programming and structural design.
