The School of Biomedical Sciences at The University of Queensland is an acknowledged leader in biomedical sciences in Australia. Our University is typically placed around 30 in the world's top 100 for biomedicine, according to The Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Our School's research strengths include cell and developmental biology, cell physiology, functional anatomy, molecular pharmacology and neuroscience. Our interests encompass animal behaviour, the biology of disease, drug development, marine science, neural regeneration, neuropathology and pedagogical studies.

The role

The successful appointees will be provided with a School-sponsored PhD scholarship, including stipend support commensurable with current Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) rates. The appointees will however, be expected to apply for ongoing support via the APA, UQ and other PhD scholarship schemes, as well as national competitive travel grants to support attendance at conferences and professional development courses.  The appointees will develop and work on individual projects aimed at addressing the critical need to understand cancer and its etiology, the pharmacokinetic behaviour of chemotherapeutic nanomedicines and/or antibody therapeutics and identify more effective chemotherapeutic nanomedicines and diagnostics to improve cancer survival rates in Australia. They will also be expected to work together with and support other members of the lab.

The person

Applicants should possess an appropriate qualification for entry into the PhD training scheme. They should have a passion for biomedical research and a strong interest in persuing a research career in biopharmaceutics, nanomedicine and/or cancer therapeutics. They should have strong general research skills and the ability to think critically, independently and to think outside of the box. Good writing and communication skills are a must. They should also be comfortable working with rodents, ideally have small animal handling skills and demonstrate a willingness to work with cytotoxic chemotherapy drugs and radiation. Applicants for these scholarships must be Australian residents. Non-Australian residents however, may apply for international scholarships through University postgraduate scholarship schemes.

Remuneration

The stipend is equivalent to the APA rate, $26,288 per annum, (2016 rate, indexed annually). The scholarship will be for three (3) years with the possibility of a six (6)-month extension and is subject to the UQ Research Scholarship General Conditions.
