Job Details

Scholar of Humanities or qualitative social sciences with a Southeast Asian language

The newly formed Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is seeking to hire a scholar of the humanities or qualitative social sciences with expertise in at least one Southeast Asian language.  The rank and area of specialization for this position are open.

We are looking for an academic who demonstrates eagerness to take part in a multi-disciplinary conversation about issues in trans-Asian contexts, with vision and skills needed to build new academic programs.  This position is part of an initiative to re-envision the study of the languages, cultures, and societies of Asia as part of the new department.

The ALC came into being in July 2016 based on the merger of the Department of East Asian Languages and Literature and the Department of Languages and Cultures of Asia, which covered the rest of Asia.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison, with a history of leading scholarship and teaching about South, Southeast, and East Asia, evaluated current contexts of our operation and identified this new direction to best serve our students and the larger community. This new academic unit is conceptualized as a site that fosters the interaction of disciplines that might otherwise be kept apart: literature, history, religion, and many other foci of scholarly practice interact in such a way that each informs the other. Conversations cutting across disciplines are integral to scholarly practice, and scholarship becomes an innately collaborative project that emerges from the rich complexity of a region itself.

Please see this page on the university website for full details of the vision and mission of this exciting new cross disciplinary academic department: http://alc.wisc.edu/about/position-opening

The appointment begins in August, 2017 and a Ph.D. is required prior to the start of the appointment. A tenured appointment for this position would require a proven record of excellence in research and teaching at all levels.

The salary on offer is competitive. Qualified applicants should send a complete dossier (including letter of application, CV, and sample publication) and three letters of reference by email to alc@letsci.wisc.edu.

To ensure full consideration, applications must be received by October 24, 2016.

For more information, please contact the search committee chair, John Dunne jddunne@wisc.edu.
