Job Details

Based in the Department of Philosophy, School of Arts, Cotham House Bristol BS6 6JL

The Analogue Simulation in Modern Physics project is a 21-month AHRC funded project with Principal Investigator Dr. Karim Thébault (Bristol) and Co-Investigator Prof. Stephan Hartmann (LMU Munich/MCMP).  This project will involve investigation of the philosophical foundations of quantum simulation and analogue gravity, with a particular focus upon developing the idea of ‘analogue simulation’ as a novel form of scientific inference encompassing the two fields.

The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively towards the refinement and pursuit of the projects goals. A particularly important responsibility will be taking a lead role in the review of technical material in the relevant areas of physics. As such, an advanced background in theoretical physics and philosophy of physics will be required. Familiarity with topics such as general relativity, quantum field theory, condensed matter physics, and quantum optics is particularly desirable.

Applicants should have, or be very near completion of, a PhD in Philosophy of Physics, Theoretical Physics or Mathematics and should have an advanced background in theoretical physics and philosophy of physics (as evidenced by relevant graduate training and/or research publications). The successful candidate will be expected to contribute towards the teaching needs of the philosophy department.
