Postdoctoral Research Fellow – Antibacterial Pharmacokinetics & Pharmacodynamics-POS000216
Description
Merck & Co., Inc. Kenilworth, N.J., U.S.A. known as Merck in the United States and Canada, is a global health care leader with a diversified portfolio of prescription medicines, vaccines and animal health products. Today, we are building a new kind of healthcare company – one that is ready to help create a healthier future for all of us.
Our ability to excel depends on the integrity, knowledge, imagination, skill, diversity and teamwork of an individual like you. To this end, we strive to create an environment of mutual respect, encouragement and teamwork. As part of our global team, you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with talented and dedicated colleagues while developing and expanding your career.
Be a part of the legacy: MRL Postdoctoral Research Fellow Program
The Merck Research Laboratories (MRL) Postdoctoral Research Fellow Program aims to be a best-in-industry program for industrial postdoctoral researchers, designed to provide you with an academic focus in a commercial environment. With the resources, reach, and expertise of a large pharmaceutical company, postdoctoral researchers will be positioned to excel in an institution committed to breakthrough innovation in research and discovery.
Position Overview:
As a postdoctoral fellow in Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics and Drug Metabolism (PPDM) you will work with a highly collaborative team of scientists from antibacterial disease area biology, pharmacology, clinical, regulatory and scientific affairs. The aim will be to develop novel in vitro and mathematical modeling methodologies to assess how drug combinations may affect the PK/PD driver for anti-infectives with an initial focus on beta-lactamase inhibitors (BLIs), including internal BLI combinations ceftolozane/tazobactam and imipenem/relebactam. This work will be leveraged to influence emerging regulatory guidance and susceptibility breakpoint recommendations.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Generate high throughput static checkerboard in vitro data to various drug combinations with a large number of resistant bacterial strains to gain a mechanistic understanding of drug resistance
- Design and execute dynamic hollow fiber experiments utilizing Merck’s own state of the art custom setup to understand antibacterial PK/PD
- Integrate the above generated data in a systems pharmacology modeling framework to provide a greater degree of insight into fundamental characteristics of antibacterial exposure-response
- Leverage the modeling platform to provide a standardized and robust approach to deriving susceptibility testing criteria and justification of breakpoints
Qualifications
Education Minimum Requirement:
- PhD with 3 years or less of postdoctoral experience or met all the requirements for a PhD by May 2017
Required Experience and Skills:
- Experience in mathematical modeling of biological systems
- Skills in conducting experiments to assess the pharmacology of infectious disease agents
- Understanding of basic pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles
Preferred Experience and Skills:
- Experience in pharmacological characterization of antibacterials, including execution of time-kill in vitro studies
- Strong history of publication in peer-reviewed journals
- Skills in at least one of the following: NONMEM, R, Matlab, or similar tools
