Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with increased complications for both mother and child, with children born to mothers with GDM having a heightened risk of obesity and metabolic disease in adulthood. Applications are invited for an experienced Bioinformatics Researcher to join our multidisciplinary group investigating the role of epigenetic processes in mediating the effect of maternal GDM on offspring adiposity and how maternal lifestyle behaviours can modify these epigenetic marks and obesity risk. This post is funded by an award from Diabetes UK.
The University of Southampton, is one of the UK’s top 15 research intensive universities and in the top one per cent of world universities. You will be based at the state-of-the-art Institute of Developmental Sciences Building on the Southampton General Hospital site, which comprises over 100 research scientists with world leading expertise in epigenetics and the developmental origins of health and disease.
You will have a PhD* or equivalent qualifications in bioinformatics or medical informatics, experience with large genome-scale DNA methylation and genotype data analysis and experience of statistical analyses (e.g. t-tests, Mann-Whitney U test, linear regression) to assess associations between methylation /genotype measurements and phenotype. It is anticipated that the post will be taken up in December 2016 and will be available for a fixed term of 2 years and 9 months.
*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
