Job Details

Research Project title:  Developing and Testing a Clinical Grade Spectroscopy Device for Cervical Assessment to Predict Preterm Birth.
  • This is an exciting opportunity to work on a device development research project developing novel techniques for the prediction of premature birth, funded by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) under the Invention for Innovation (i4i) scheme.
  • The project is a collaborative partnership between The University of Sheffield and the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
  • The aim of the project is to develop and manufacture the clinical grade version of a device for cervical assessment which will be employed for clinical studies assessing its ability to discriminate the characteristics of uterine cervical tissue preparatory to birth.
  • The project will also compare the technique to conventional methods of screening for preterm birth risk in clinical practice. The initial element of the work package includes upgrading the current version of the device hardware and software to enable its use in clinical practice.
  • The main element of the project is undertaking clinical experimental studies using the device in cohorts of pregnant women to determine predictive potential for spontaneous preterm birth.
  • Working as part of a small, friendly and enthusiastic team you will take a leading role in all aspects of the clinical experimental studies.

You should have a good honours degree in Medicine and Surgery and a minimum of two years’ experience as a trainee in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Experience with providing antenatal care to high-risk pregnant women would be desirable along with experience of basic research method and ultrasonography in obstetrics and gynaecology.

This is an excellent opportunity for an innovative and enthusiastic candidate to gain experience of working on a project at the interface of clinical care in Women’s Health and clinical research. You will be highly motivated, innovative and be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
