Funding: fees and a stipend of £22,000 per year.

Applications are invited for PhD studentships in Cyber Security. The successful candidates will conduct research as part of the Southampton Cyber Security Academy (CSA), a newly formed partnership between the University of Southampton and key industrial partners in the Cyber Security area (http://www.soton.ac.uk/csa). The CSA provides a unique environment that facilitates use-inspired and multi-disciplinary research, education, training and outreach. It draws together expertise from across the University, including Computing, Electronics, Law, Management, Mathematics, Sociology and Psychology.

The CSA cuts across the entire cyber security domain, and we are looking for highly motivated and excellent students to conduct high quality, original research in cyber security.

Specific Areas of Interest Include:

  • Trust;
  • Cyber situational awareness;
  • Formal methods;
  • The human component in cyber security;
  • Machine learning;
  • Risk analysis and management;
  • Hardware security assurance;
  • Validation and verification;
  • Data provenance;
  • Autonomy;
  • Probabilistic modelling;
  • Data analysis;
  • Emergent behaviour in the Internet of Things;
  • Characterisation of vulnerabilities in embedded control systems;
  • Software defined networks;
  • Anomaly and intrusion detection;
  • Attack mitigation;
  • Damage assessment;
  • The defence of complex systems;
  • Cryptography for low-power devices;
  • Safety and security co-design;
  • Anonymity and privacy;
  • Domain specific languages for cyber security.

 

Candidate Requirements:

Applications would be welcome from candidates holding good degrees (first class or upper-second class) in a relevant subject.

The successful applicants will be expected to work in partnership with industry through the CSA, and this is likely to require UK security clearance.
