The University of Queensland's Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) is a leading global life sciences research institute committed to improving quality of life through research. By investigating how we grow and develop at the genetic, molecular, cellular and organ levels, IMB researchers can better understand the development processes and pathways involved in human and animal health and disease. The institute also has the technical capacity to translate its new knowledge into drugs, diagnostics and technologies to more effectively prevent, detect and treat disease; and pursue opportunities in a range of biotechnology applications for health, industry and the environment.

IMB's research outcomes are protected and commercialised by UQ-owned technology transfer group UniQuest.

Organisational Environment

QFAB@QCIF is a leading provider of bioinformatics, biostatistics and biodata services for life science and clinical researchers. Working closely with researchers, the QFAB@QCIF Team applies data management, integration, analysis and visualisation techniques to maximise the potential value of large-scale biological and clinical datasets.

QFAB@QCIF is the consulting branch of QCIF, a non-for-profit public company whose members are six Queensland-based universities. This position will be hosted at UQ's Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB), which is one of Australia's premier biomedical research Institutes. It houses 32 research groups in the Divisions of Computational Biology and Genomics, Chemical and Structural Biology, Molecular Cell Biology, and Molecular Genetics and Development. The institute's emphasis is on quality research and its translation into medical and biotechnological outcomes.

The role

As part of QFAB's leadership team, we are seeking an outstanding scientist with significant bioinformatics experience in genomics to head a team which delivers innovative, high-quality and time-driven results for a wide variety of research programs from within universities, research institutes and industry.  This position offers an outstanding opportunity to work with leading researchers and contribute to cutting-edge research projects in the biological, agricultural, environmental and medical sciences.

The position involves gathering research requirements from existing and potential clients, developing with them new proposals and delivering efficient solutions and outcomes that exceed their expectations. 

The person

Applicants should have demonstrated expertise in bioinformatics applied to genomics and other omics technologies. In addition to scientific excellence, applicants will have demonstrated success in team leadership, project management and customer orientation.  Driven by results and measured on performance, the applicant will demonstrate a high level of personal motivation and initiative to work autonomously and have the ability to work as part of a management team. Applicants should possess a PhD with at least 6 years of experience in relevant fields.

This role is a full-time position; however flexible working arrangements may be negotiated. 

Remuneration

This is a full-time, two year fixed term appointment at HEW Level 8 or 9. The remuneration package will be in the range $90,107 - $101,179 p.a. (HEW 8) OR in the range of $105,640 - $111,790 p.a. (HEW 9), plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $105,426 – $118,379 p.a. (HEW 8) or $123,599 – 130,794 p.a. (HEW 9)).  The level of appointment will commensurate with the successful applicant's qualifications and/or experience.
