PhD Studentship: Design of warning-sound sources for electric vehicles to minimise drive-by noise

Signal Processing & Control Group

Location: Highfield Campus

Closing Date:  Tuesday 28 February 2017

Reference: 803316KR

Project  Reference: ISVR-SPCG-124

Project Theme:  Acoustics   Applications are invited to work with Steve Elliott and Jordan Cheer as part of a European-funded Marie Sklodowska-Curie European Integrated Training Network (ITN) on “Next generation pass-by noise approaches for new powertrain vehicles”. Funding on this project is guaranteed regardless of any future change of relationship between the UK and the EU. This project includes five Universities and five industrial partners from across Europe, and will support a total of 14 researchers in this general research area, who will all meet regularly at biannual project meetings held across Europe. Successful applicants will also register for a PhD at the University of Southampton.

The topic of this PhD is:

“Design of warning-sound sources for electric vehicles to minimise drive-by noise”

Electric vehicles need to use artificial sound sources that are designed to warn pedestrians of their approach. The sound level of such sources in the forward direction is determined by the requirements of good audibility for these pedestrians. The drive-by noise, however, as measured on one side of the vehicle, is also determined by the directivity of the source of warning sounds. This project would consider designs in which the directivity was optimised to minimise the drive-by noise, while maintaining an appropriate level in the forward direction. In particular, the performance of a novel directional sound source, implemented as a line array, will be considered and optimised to both maximise its efficiency and minimise the drive-by noise.

Candidates must be in possession of (or expected to obtain) a first class or a 2:1 degree in engineering, applied mathematics/physics or a relevant discipline. Some experience with signal processing and/or acoustics would also be desirable.

Candidates will also be required to meet the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Early Stage Researcher eligibility criteria: (ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions). In particular, at the time of appointment candidates must have had less than four years full-time equivalent research experience and must not have already obtained a PhD. Additionally, they must not have resided in the (host country) UK for more than 12 months in the three years immediately before the appointment.

This full-time post will be available from May 2017 and is offered on a fixed-term 36 month contract. The post benefits from a highly competitive and attractive salary, plus mobility and family allowances as applicable.

The University of Southampton values diversity and are committed to equality of opportunity. The University holds a Silver Athena SWAN Award in recognition of its commitment to advancing women’s careers in science. You can read more about what this means at: http://www.athenaswan.org.uk.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Prof Steve Elliott or Dr Jordan Cheer at ISVR University of Southampton Email: sje@soton.ac.uk, j.cheer@soton.ac.uk. Formal applications must be made through the University’s online application system.
