Department of Medical Virology School of Pathology

The School of Pathology is a joint venture between NHLS and the University, and is funded by both organisations as well as donations from private enterprise.

The Department of Virology in the School of Pathology requires the services of a Medical Scientist to take responsibility for all activities pertaining to the planning, administration, and execution of molecular assays used in virological research at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Associate Researcher (AC.09)

Qualifications

•       Minimum requirement is a MSc in Virology

•       Registered (or in the process of registering) with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPSCA) as a Medical Scientist (or related discipline)

 

Required Knowledge and Skills

•       In-depth knowledge of molecular virology.

•       Experience in the field of breast milk and Dried Blood Spot analysis.

•       Excellent written and oral communication skills

•       Excellent problem-solving skills

•       Efficient management and mentoring skills

 

Responsibilities

The incumbent' s responsibilities will include inter alia:

•       Postgraduate teaching: BHSc Honours in Virology

•       Assisting in the overall planning, running and teaching of Masters Virology course

•       Supervision of Honours research projects (theoretical and practical)

•       Setting and marking of exams and research reports

•       Assisting in the setting and marking of the mid-block test and the end of block exam

•       Research supervision of postgraduate students

•       Participating in specific research projects in the Department

•       Writing up of research for publication
