JOB PURPOSE:

To plan and deliver a range of Occupational Health nursing services to the clients of the University, mainly students and staff.
Reporting to the Occupational Health Physician, you will be working as part of an Occupational Health & Safety team including other
nursing, safety and support staff. You will be expected to liaise with other staff within the University and other relevant external
employers and service providers. You will be required to engage in professional development and appraisal.

MAJOR DUTIES:

1. Organisation and provision of pre-engagement, study and employment screening examinations for students and staff in at-risk
groups e.g. nursing, medical, dental, teacher-training students and staff involved in hazardous areas of work.
2. Organisation and provision of vaccination and other programmes for the above groups of students and staff as required for
Occupational Health and Safety/placement abroad. Travel advice and vaccinations as appropriate.
3. Provide post-vaccination testing, interpretation of laboratory results and dissemination of information. Advise clients on further
vaccination as required and appropriate.
4. Organise and provide assessments and reports on students and staff in relation to fitness for study / work, sickness absence and disability.
5. Organisation and provision of emergency medical services on campus, including emergency examination cover for students.
Immediate assessment of conditions, emergency treatment and referral to GP or A&E as necessary.
6. Organisation of First Aid training and provision of Appointed Person training in accordance with First Aid at Work and other
regulations. Special First Aid related courses for Student Accommodation staff, fieldtrip staff and student sports groups.
7. To supervise the nursing staff of the service including rotas, training, registration and appraisal of full and part-time staff to
ensure efficient and effective delivery of service.
8. In conjunction with the Occupational Health Physician, to develop nursing procedures and guidelines to address University
workplace needs; to design and implement screening programmes as required; to assist with other service developments.
9. To assist and support the delivery and evaluation of various health promotion programmes throughout the university as
required. Such programmes include for example, Smoking, Stress, Health and Safety, Fitness, Diet and other health issues as appropriate.
10. Procurement and maintenance of all equipment, clinical supplies, vaccines and protective equipment for Occupational Health staff.
11. Maintenance and secure storage of all confidential paper and computerized medical records.

Planning and Organising:

1. Prioritise own workload within a general schedule and assist senior staff in planning for future work so that resources are
available to meet specific objectives.

Resource Management Responsibilities:

1. Maintain clinical equipment as required.
2. Responsible for stocks/stores of equipment and supplies within a delegated budget so that resources are available when required.
3. Supervision of nursing staff in Department.

Internal and External Relationships:

1. Liaise with internal University Schools, Faculties, Departments and Directorates as appropriate, to include Personnel
Department, Disability Services, Student Support Services.
2. Liaise with GPs and other Occupational Health Departments as appropriate.
3. Daily contact with Supervisor, work colleagues and University staff.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

1. Registered as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse, on part 1 (Adult) and Part 3 (Occupational Health) of the live NMC Register (UK).
2. Evidence of ongoing CPD & CPR update.
3. Five years recent relevant experience of Occupational Health Nursing in Higher Education, National Health Service or other
large organisation including:
- Provision of occupational health assessments and reports.
- Delivery of training in health promotion to individuals or groups.
4. Committed to continuous improvement and excellence in service delivery of own work and the Department.
5. Excellent organisational skills.
6. Good IT skills.
7. Ability to use sound judgement, evidence and knowledge to provide accurate, expert and professional advice.
8. High level of self-confidence.
9. Ability to work effectively, as part of a team, and on own initiative.
10. Excellent communication skills.
11. Full driving licence.
12. Membership of a professional body such as RCN.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

1. Postgraduate degree in Occupational Health Nursing.
2. Awareness of recent changes in Occupational Health practice as it applies to Universities.
3. Experience of development of Occupational Health protocols and policies.
4. Experience of supervising nursing, or other professional staff.
5. Provision of emergency assessment and treatment of patients.
6. Knowledge of an industry standard Occupational Health IT system.
