Based in the Department of Computer Science, we are looking for an independent and motivated Research Associate (RA) to focus on the Social and Cultural Implications of Data Technologies. The RA would join a research group funded by the ERC Grant ThinkBIG and will assist the Principal Investigator in researching, developing and writing articles on the various ways in which data-driven technologies can impact society, and in outreach activities.

We are looking for an independent and motivated research associate starting as soon as possible with funding up to 28 February 2019, in the area of "social and cultural implications of data technologies". In particular, you will assist the Principal Investigator in researching, writing reports and articles addressing the various ways in which data-driven technologies can impact society. This includes issues of privacy, ethics, fairness, employment and digital labour, users influence. They would also be involved in outreach and dissemination.

The ideal candidate would work closely with the PI and the rest of the research group, in an engineering environment, on issues relative to the social impact of data technologies. Excellent communications skills and flexibility are essential for this role.

You should be able to familiarise yourself with recent studies and reports produced by relevant scholars and organizations, understand new technologies, and be able to understand the legal framework (existing and proposed) regulating data protection. Ideally you will be familiar with the STS (science and technology studies) research so as to draw parallels with the existing research and past technologies. A background in sociology, philosophy or political science is desirable but not essential.

This post is being offered on a full time, open ended contract, with funding up to 28 February 2019.
