Research Project Title: Structural and Functional Neuroimaging Biomarkers of Brain Maturation and Ageing
Principal Investigator: Professor Balázs Gulyás, LKCMedicine

Project Description:
Recent surveys in Singapore indicate that one in ten people aged 60 and above has dementia combined often with other neurological deficits. The WHO statistics shows that there are currently 47.5 million people with dementia and 7.7 million new cases are diagnosed every year worldwide. Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) represent a combined medical and socio-economic problem. They are common in developed countries due to various reasons, including the increasingly ageing population, stress, primary and secondary brain injuries.

With the establishment of a Human Brain Imaging Centre at LKCMedicine, NTU, we have the opportunities to visualize the structure of the human brain with extremely high spatial accuracy, to reveal its internal connections and to explore its functional dynamics with uniquely high temporal resolution. Consequently, we have a cutting-edge methodological platform to follow the human brain’s development during normal maturation and ageing as well as during pathological development and ageing.

The present theme focuses on the identification of “normal patterns” as compared to “pathological patterns” of brain maturation and ageing, using advanced neuroimaging technologies, including MRI, MEG, EEG and NIRS.
