The Department of Political Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand is looking to appoint a new member of academic staff.

This is a permanent position at the rank of lecturer, and is open to candidates who are working/researching in any area of political studies. The department would especially value applications from researchers with expertise in public policy, elections, politics in  sub-Saharan Africa and/or post-colonial theory. However, candidates with expertise in any aspect of political studies will receive serious consideration.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach large and diverse classes in all years of study, cooperate with colleagues in advancing the objectives of the Department, and contribute actively to the intellectual and administrative life of the Department and University. Candidates should possess a PhD or have a PhD under examination.

The preferred candidate would show promise as a productive researcher and effective teacher and administrator. Commencement of a publication career will be advantageous.

Remuneration: A competitive salary with excellent benefits will be offered, dependent on qualifications and experience.

Applications should include i) a formal cover letter, ii) a comprehensive curriculum vitae, iii) a two-page summary of career highlights that outlines education, publications, teaching and community engagement (this will be made available to the department as a whole), and iv) the contact details of at least three academic referees. Candidates who have not yet been formally awarded their Ph.D. must provide a letter from their supervisor confirming that the thesis is currently under examination.
