PhD Studentship in Atmospheric Corrosion of Stainless Steel Nuclear Waste Containers

Details

The aim of the project is to determine the factors that control the atmospheric corrosion of stainless steel nuclear waste containers in above ground stores. Pitting corrosion can develop when salt layers deposit on container surfaces and then deliquesce to form corrosive droplets. This will be simulated by robotic deposition of arrays of droplets that contain different combinations of salts and other atmospheric contaminants to investigate the effect of droplet chemistry on corrosion behaviour. The evolution of corrosion over time will be captured with novel imaging methods, and quantified with image analysis in order to evaluate the risk of corrosion in different environments.

The project will suit a UK/EU candidate with a good first degree in Materials Science or any physical science or engineering discipline with a good experimental skills and experience or an interest in programmes such as Matlab.

Funding Notes

Studentship covers PhD tuition fees and a tax-free stipend at the current RCUK rate (£14,533 in 2017/18)
