German culture and memory of the First World War

PhD proposals welcomed within the broad area of German culture and memory of the First World War. Compared to the British and French experience of the First World War, ways in which German writers and artists have attempted to come to terms with that conflict is an underresearched field, as are processes of remembering the First World War in Germany, both in the interwar period and since 1945.

Nietzsche

PhD proposals welcomed within the following broad areas of Nietzsche studies:

- Origins and development of Nietzsche's thought and cultural criticism
- Nietzsche's theories of art and culture
- Nietzsche's critique of Western culture and values
- Nietzsche's styles and modes of expression
- Aspects of Nietzsche's cultural reception in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

The ability to read Nietzsche in German is essential, and some prior knowledge of his work is desirable.

Funding Notes:

There are a limited number of funding opportunities with the College of Arts and Law, however, competition for these scholarships is fierce and only those with the highest credentials are likely to be successful. For more information see: http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/schools/calgs/scholarships/index.aspx

Enquiries from self-funded students are also welcome.
