Exciting opportunities exist for students wishing to pursue a doctoral degree in the areas of preterm infant research or intellectual disability research, within the Developmental Disorders Group. Students will be based at the state of the art Translational Research Institute (TRI) and/or the Mater Hospital campus in Brisbane. Various doctoral projects are available, ranging from basic science to cohort studies involving follow up of participants.

Mater Research is a world-class medical research institute based in South Brisbane, Australia. Mater Research has had a presence at Mater hospitals for many years, first established in 1998. Now with more than 300 laboratory and clinical researchers, Mater Research has expanded its reach across Mater's hospitals and health services, and is an internationally recognised leader in medical research.

Mater Research is a founding partner of the TRI, working together with The University of Queensland Diamantina Institute, Queensland University of Technology's Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, and the Princess Alexandra Hospital's Centres of Health Research to build a world-class facility supporting medical research and its translation into clinical practice.

Mater Research and The University of Queensland formalised a longstanding relationship to form Mater Research Institute – The University of Queensland (MRI-UQ), a collaborative alliance between two leading institutions working together to achieve the best possible research discoveries in health.

 

The role

Prospective applicants will have a strong interest in preterm infant research or intellectual disability research in the field of neurodevelopment and good knowledge of genetics, physiology and/or cell biology. The successful applicant will belong to a multidisciplinary research environment that has strong collaborations across Brisbane. Although, experience in working with preterm infants or individuals with intellectual disability, and working in a PC2 level laboratory is desirable, it is not essential and appropriate training and supervision will be provided to the successful candidates. This doctoral training will be an ideal opportunity for both domestic and international medical and non-medical graduates who are planning an academic and/or clinical research career.

 

The person

Prospective applicants must meet the following entry requirements:

  1. Applicants should possess a bachelor with honours or masters, or equivalent degree with distinguished academic records and relevant research experience.

  2. Applicants should be able to enrol full-time in the doctoral training program.

  3. Applicants should have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively within multidisciplinary biomedical and clinical research teams.

  4. Applicants should be able to demonstrate the ability to understand and develop skills in clinical research methodology and biostatistics.

  5. Applicants should have excellent scientific writing and communication skills

  6. Applicants should be highly self-motivated and able to work independently

 

Careful consideration will be given to letters of recommendation from faculty members or research mentors who have close first-hand knowledge of the applicants academic and research abilities

 

Remuneration

Selected prospective students will receive assistance to apply for either, the UQ Research Training Scholarship - Living Allowance or for international students, the UQ Research Training Scholarship - Tuition Fee Offset. The current Living Allowance rate is AUD$26,682 per annum (2017 rate, indexed annually) tax-free for three years with a possible six month extension in approved circumstances.

In addition a there will be a top-up stipend of $5000 per annum for the first year, which may be extended on an annual basis, based on progress and performance.
