DEAN AND PROFESSOR

 

In pursuit of the ideals of excellence and diversity, the University of Pretoria wishes to invite applications for the following vacancy.

The Faculty of Veterinary Science is situated on a satellite campus of the University of Pretoria located at Onderstepoort. The Faculty is widely considered to be a leading veterinary faculty in Africa. In order to fulfil its mission, the Faculty has five academic departments responsible for teaching, research and service rendering. These activities are further facilitated by well-developed support services provided by a world-class first-opinion and referral academic veterinary hospital, various departmental laboratories, general and student administrative sections, a state-of-the-art skills laboratory, teaching animal unit and library, educational and medical support centres, accommodation and sporting facilities, and a number of research centres.

The University seeks to appoint a dynamic Dean who will demonstrate visionary leadership, strategic thinking, and the ability to manage the Faculty and execute plans successfully. In addition, the Dean must have a strong academic record, including a doctoral degree. Applicants should have experience in working with the veterinary profession and veterinary and animal production communities. The Dean is assisted by a Deputy Dean: Research and Postgraduate Education, Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning, Heads of Academic Departments, a Faculty Manager and additional support staff.

The position of Professor and Dean of the Faculty will be vacant with effect from 1 August 2018 and suitably qualified persons are invited to apply.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the alignment of the ethos, vision and mission of the Faculty with that of the University. S/he must be able to provide strong academic leadership and create an environment conducive to high-impact research activities. The Dean is expected to market the Faculty, to undertake fundraising and to promote regional, national as well as international liaison with other academic institutions, research organisations, professional bodies, government and the community. The Dean forms part of the senior management team of the University.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Registration (or registerable/authorisation) with the SA Veterinary Council;

  • A doctorate in Veterinary Science or a Veterinary Science-related discipline;

  • The ability to provide academic leadership in the Faculty and to enhance and build the    Faculty’s academic stature;

  • Proven teaching and research ability, an established record of research achievements as well as the ability to create an environment in which research activities are strongly supported and can flourish;

  • Proven managerial expertise, skills and competencies in all areas required to manage the Faculty, including knowledge of and experience in finance, human resources and marketing;

  • Strong leadership skills and the capacity to engender good interpersonal relations in academic and support staff teams;

  • Excellent communication and appropriate language skills.

 

Recommendations:

  • An academic background and experience in a higher education institution, especially in a managerial capacity.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

The Dean is appointed for a term of four years, but external candidates will also be considered for a permanent academic appointment in a suitable academic department within the University.
