Job Details
Outstanding graduate students are invited to apply for a PhD studentship to study the interaction between contact lens and eye. There are approximately 125 million contact lens users worldwide. Over 50% of these users complain of some level of discomfort that results from dryness of the eye, irritation from the contact lens rubbing against the eye and eye infection. The PhD student will design and develop an in vitro testing platform to understand the tribology between contact lens and eye. This in vitro set-up will be used for pre-clinical testing of contact lens help in understanding discomfort in the eye. The project will also involve in vivo studies to investigate methods to quantify damage and external parameters affecting this tribological interaction in association with the Ophthalmology section based at Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The student will be encouraged to present their findings at national and international conferences and to publish in high-quality, international journals.
The PhD student will be jointly supervised by Dr Raman Maiti and Prof Roger Lewis (University of Sheffield).
Dr Raman Maiti is a Research Fellow working on the “Friction: The Tribology Enigma” Programme Grant between the Universities of Leeds and Sheffield. He is a part of the Leonardo Tribology Centre and focus’ his research on Orthopaedics, Dermatology and Ophthalmology. Professor Roger Lewis’s research themes are focussed on Railway Engineering and Human Interactions. His research interest is split in three area solving industrial wear problems, development of ultrasonic techniques for machine element contact analysis and design of engineering components and machines. Entry Requirements
Applicant should possess a good honours degree with a strong background in design and/or tribology. Training will be given in all areas needed as a part of the Doctoral Development Programme run at The University of Sheffield.

Funding Notes
This studentship is provided by the Engineering Physical Science Research Council and is funded for 3 years starting September 2018. Full payment of tuition fees and maintenance will be provided at standard UK/EU rate (£14553 in 2017/18).
International students are welcome to apply provided they can acquire full funding to work on this project.
