Job Details

Job summary

In this project to be developed by a postdoctoral researcher, we propose to study the chromosomal polymorphism and ploidy in Trypanosoma cruzi, and their role on the parasite's adaptive response to environmental pressure. We will examine the effects of the stress on chromosome organization and ploidy, which may contribute to the genetic diversity of T. cruzi.

Among the main objectives to be pursued are:

  1. Investigate genetic variability (aneuploidy and synteny) in natural T. cruzi populations isolated from chagasic patients and cultured for a limited time in the laboratory;
  2. Demonstrate the presence of mosaic aneuploidy in populations of T. cruzi by FISH technique;
  3. Investigate the mechanisms involved in the generation of chromosomal rearrangements and aneuploidy in parasites exposed to different stress conditions.

The work is part of a FAPESP Thematic Project.

Desired skills and experience

Ideally, the postdoctoral fellow should have experience in working with Trypanosoma cruzi in area related to the Project. Skills in molecular biology/biochemistry techniques and experience in phenotypic screening using in vivo model systems will help in advancing the project.

Further information

The candidates for the fellowship should send by e-mail to jose.franco@unifesp.br:

  • Letter indicating the reason of interest in the fellowship and a brief description of previous experience;
  • Updated CV;
  • Names and e-mails of researchers (at least two) who may provide references.

The selected candidate will receive FAPESP PD fellowship (R$ 7,373.10/ month) and a research contingency fund, equivalent to 15% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent in items directly related to the research activity..

More information abot the fellowship is at: fapesp.br/oportunidades/2621.
