Job summary

Due to evidence that brain changes accompany pubertal development, it is suggested that sexual maturation is an important aspect of cognitive development that occurs in early adolescence. However, this has been little investigated. The project explores the relationship of pubertal stages and typical development of self-regulation of behavior (hot and cold executive functions, impulsiveness, changes in mood, etc.). Various biopsychosocial moderators are also considered, such as socioeconomic status and risk and allostatic load.

The main cognitive measures are based on executive function fractionation in the models of Miyake et al. (2000; Friedman and Miyake, 2017) and impulsivity (Whiteside and Lynam, 2001; UPPS).

The project includes the development of open access cognitive measures suitable for the studied population, a cross-sectional study (data collection is underway) and dissemination of findings to peers and laypeople. The systematic review is inserted as a step to survey all the available literature for a better characterization of the relationship between pubertal development and behavioral self-regulation.

The study will be conducted under the supervision of Professor Sabine Pompéia of the Graduate Program in Psychobiology at UNIFESP with the collaboration of professors Hugo Cogo Moreira and to Mônica Carolina Miranda.

The project will be carried out in facilities located in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. The value of the monthly grant is approximately BRL7,300.00 (approximately USD2,000.00) plus a research contingency fund, equivalent to 15% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent in items directly related to the research activity.

Candidate's profile

The candidate should have interest in undertaking a systematic review regarding the development of behavior in adolescence and have prior experience in cognitive psychology (preferably with additional expertise in systematic reviews and/or pubertal development or associated fields). He/she must also be willing to assist the Principal Investigators (PIs) on the day-to-day activities relating to the whole project. This includes producing and disseminating findings to peers and laypeople (in Portuguese and English) and overseeing the activities of the technical fellows and postgraduate students involved in the project.

There is no restriction regarding the candidate's original undergraduate course or nationality. They must be fluent in English, have experience in studies in cognitive psychology and have obtained their PhD after 2011/2012. Ideally, they should also have some experience in systematic reviews and/or knowledge regarding pubertal development or associated themes.

Other prerequisites

  1. Availability to reside in São Paulo, Brazil, during the period of the grant;
  2. Foreign applicants should be willing to learn basic Portuguese;
  3. Applicants must have published at least the results of their doctoral projects.
