The W.H. Bryan Mining and Geology Research Centre (BRC) has a reputation for practical innovation and leadership in deep mine development and operation. With a diverse range of mining and 'geo' expertise, the Centre is focused on delivering industrial research solutions for active and future mines. It does this by developing new and improved methods for ore extraction and enhancing total deposit knowledge and predictive understanding of ore bodies.

The Julius Kruttschnitt Minerals Research Centre (JKMRC) is a world class provider of postgraduate education and innovative applied research in mineral processing and geometallurgy. The Centre has an outstanding international reputation as an innovator in mining and mineral processing research. It is the largest Australian research centre in this field and collaborates with major mining and mineral processing research groups worldwide.

The role

In this newly created role, you will provide specialist technical support and high quality laboratory and facility support for SMI's Production Centres' research activity. Day to day responsibilities will include:
  • Guiding others in testing and development projects, test work, set up and technical/equipment training.
  • Assisting in the development of testing procedures and methodologies utilised in the laboratories, pilot plant and workshop.
  • Maintaining, servicing, repairing and calibrating laboratory equipment.
  • Assisting with preparation for external site work, including plant surveys.
  • Performing laboratory and Pilot Plant Facility test work and generate reports.
  • Training others in plant and equipment operation, Safe Operating Procedures, Risk Assessments and safety processes.
  • Ensuring a high standard of occupational health and safety standards and systems and a high level of risk management at all times.


The person

To be successful in this appointment, you will be able to demonstrate:
  • Relevant experience in a scientific role, in a research environment in metallurgy/chemistry or minerals processing essential.
  • A degree in Metallurgical/Chemical engineering, or equivalent relevant area.
  • A strong understanding of OH&S principles and practices.
  • Experience using and maintaining laboratory equipment.
  • Experience in laboratory data analysis, including using spreadsheets.


In addition to the above, you will have a high level of communication skills, hold a conscientious attention to following correct procedures, and have a collaborative approach to your work each day.

You must have valid Australian work rights to apply for this role. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Salary and Benefits

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment for 1 year at HEW Level 6. The remuneration package will be in the range $77,400.25 to $83,267.08 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17.0% (total package will be in the range $90,558.29 to $97,422.48 p.a.)
