Essential Responsibilities:
As a Mechanical Engineer - Microstructural Lifing, you will join the Lifing Technologies Laboratory in the Energy and Propulsion Technologies Organization that is responsible for developing, improving and applying engineering mechanics, and mechanics of advanced materials and physics-based lifing technology to high-performance products across GE businesses and their customers.

As part of a multidisplinary team, you will:

  • Work with cross-functional global team to develop and apply physics-based life prediction methods/tools to high temperature components in power generation and propulsion equipments.

  • Execute projects for the next generation turbomachinery lifing technologies with special emphasis on developing an engineering methodology based on concepts involving crack initiation at the grain level, and microstructurally small crack propagation. The applicant should be familiar with crystal plasticity methods to calculate stress and strains for use in crack initiation and propagation analyses at the grain level.

  • Use FEM fracture mechanics methods in developing an understanding of small crack growth.
  • Communicate results to counterparts in the research center and at GE businesses.

  • Document the results of this activity through patent applications, technical reports and publications generating research reports
  • Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Doctorate degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or related disciplines OR Masters degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with minimum 3 years of post-degree experience in microstructural based lifing.

  • Demonstrate strong technical skills in solid mechanics, fracture mechanics, mechanical behavior of materials, finite element methods (including advanced meshing tools and non-linear analysis) & life predication. Experience with multiscale fatigue concepts required.

  • Demonstrated experience with failure and deformation modes with powder metallurgy materials

  • Demonstrated knowledge in FEM fracture mechanics methods will be useful in developing an understanding of small crack growth.

  • Demonstrated familiarity with crystal plasticity methods to calculate stress and strains for use in crack initiation and propagation analyses at the grain level.

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.
  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.

  • Must be willing to take a drug test and submit to a background investigation as part of the selection process.

  • Must be 18 years or older.

  • You must submit your application for employment through GECareers.com to be considered
  • Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
GE will only employ those who are legally authorized to work in the United States for this opening. Any offer of employment is conditioned upon the successful completion of a background investigation and drug screen.

    Desired Characteristics:

  • Doctorate degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Hands-on experience with one or more commercial finite element codes (e.g. ANSYS, ABAQUS, LS-DYNA)
  • Experience in turbomachinary lifing.
  • Experience in Thermo-Mechanical modeling of complex geometry components in ANSYS.
  • Posses software programming skills (Fortan, C )
  • Experimental experience is a plus.
  • Experience with mathematical modeling of metallurgical failure and deformation modes is desirable.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in finite element analysis and failure prediction methodologies is essential
  • Demonstrated Leadership skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Self - motivated and posses high energy.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
