Essential Responsibilities:
As a Specialist you will apply your expertise in Scanning Electron Microscopy to support research scientists working on internal and external programs at GRC.


  • Responsibilities will include assisting the Microscopy and Microanalysis team to develop and maintain an internal customer base for SEM characterization.
  • You will take ownership of the maintenance and calibration of multiple scanning electron microscopes and be expected to develop new processes under the guidance of research scientists.

    Ideal candidate should be a self-starter who requires no training in scanning electron microscopy and will be able to immediately assist with a high volume workflow.
    Candidate will be expected to develop and maintain good communications and responsiveness to the needs of the team and internal GRC researchers.
    The ideal candidate will strive to maintain high data quality standards expectations through application of analytical skills and instrument knowledge.
    You will:
    • Maintain high productivity in a high volume laboratory setting.
    • Be expected to have knowledge of preparing SEM samples for a wide range of materials, possibly
    • Be expected to have knowledge of preparing SEM samples for a wide range of materials, possibly including electronic and biological materials.
    • Have a high proficiency in interpreting electron dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) data and operating the software for a wide range of EDS systems.
    • Take direction from and assist research scientists in maintaining and calibration instruments and responding to time sensitive and critical analytical requests.
    • Have work schedule flexibility to accommodate instrument availability and time sensitive analyses.
    • Be expected to use MS Excel to analyze data and imaging software.
    • Develop or assist in the development new sample preparation techniques.

Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Bachelors of Science in materials science, ceramics, metallurgy, physics, or related field of study with at least 3 years industrial experience
  • Prior hands on experience performing scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy on a wide variety of materials.
  • Prior experience in the maintenance and calibration of advanced electron microscopes.
  • Knowledge of microstructures of metallic, ceramic, and polymeric materials.
  • Proven ability to maintain high productivity in a high sample volume laboratory.
  • Ability to work in a clean room environment.
  • Experience using scanning electron microscopes and EDS software from a wide range of manufacturers.
  • Must be willing to work 2nd shift.

  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY
  • Must be willing to take a drug test and submit to a background investigation as part of the selection process.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

Desired Characteristics:

  • 5 years of experience in high resolution imaging using a scanning electron microscope, sample preparation, and microanalysis by electron dispersive x-ray spectroscopy.
  • Prior experience performing scanning electron microscopy in an industrial lab environment.
  • Prior experience in image analysis is desirable.
  • Experience in performing failure analyses of components and materials.
  • Must be able to follow mandatory safety procedures, and practices.
  • Flexibility in work schedule based on instrument availability.
  • Experience in sample preparation using a Focused Ion Beam instrument.
  • As a minimum the candidate must have a strong background using MS PowerPoint and Word to document results.
  • Able to manage time and coordinate work on multiple SEM requests simultaneously.
  • Works well in a team environment where instruments are shared.
  • Ability to assist researchers on an as needed basis.
  • Manages time efficiently and performs duties as assigned.
  • Needs the personality, strong work ethic, communication skills, and flexibility to work in a service oriented laboratory.
  • Strong interpersonal skills needed to work within a shared instrument lab and with other analytical labs.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
