At Merck, Process Development and Engineering Department is responsible to develop upstream and downstream processes supporting both early and late stage biologics as well transferring these processes within internal and external manufacturing network. With Merck’s increasing biologics portfolio, the Process Development and Engineering department is seeking a highly motivated and experienced senior principal scientist to lead the development of efficient and robust upstream processes with high productivity and product quality for early and late stage protein therapeutics.

The talented individual will lead and manage a group of scientists, and oversee development of upstream processes for multiple programs at different stages. In this role, the individual is expected to have end-to-end product/process development understanding and will be expected to lead CMC teams. In this role, the individual is expected to develop workflows to accelerate both early and late stage upstream process development. The individual is expected to work across divisions and cross-functionally to drive strategies and gain alignment.



- BS degree with a minimum of 16 years of experience or a MS degree with a minimum of 15 years of experience or a PhD with a minimum of 12 years of experience


- Late stage process development experience for multiple programs

- Experience with completing regulatory filings such as CMC sections of IND and BLA filings.

- Solid understanding and hands-on experience in upstream process development and scale-down model development for cell culture process.

- Solid experience in chemically defined medium and feed development for fed-batch and/or perfusion processes.

- Excellent scientific understanding of cell biology and engineering principles for recombinant protein production with mammalian cell culture, including molecular biology, cell metabolism, upstream process development and scale-up.

- Demonstrated scale-up and tech transfer of upstream processes for clinical or commercial manufacturing.

- Solid record of accomplishments in the field of upstream process development.

- Demonstrated ability in leading functional teams in multidisciplinary environment.

- Excellent oral and written communication skills.

- Demonstrated managerial and employee development skills.


- Experience in applying innovative tools such PAT for cell culture process development and characterization.

- Hands-on experience and solid knowledge on advanced statistical and computational tools (e.g. multivariate data analysis and Computational Fluid Dynamics).

- Solid understanding and experience in cGMP manufacturing of biologics.
