Associate Director – Merck Research Labs (MRL) Finance FE&A is responsible for overall Financial Evaluations and Analysis for the MRL pipeline. The incumbent will be responsible for performing asset valuations for Human Health Product Approval Committee (HHPAC) and Late Development Review Committee (LDRC) meetings across all Therapeutic Areas (TA’s). The incumbent is also responsible for maintaining the MRL valuation models and the In-Process R&D (IPR&D) workflow.

Key responsibilities include:

- Work in partnership with the GHH (Global Human Health)/Merck Manufacturing Division (MMD) Finance groups to provide relevant financial information are available to LDRC and HHPAC.

- Valuations: Act as a steward of the MRL valuation model, including making enhancements to processes and systems supporting the model. Work closely with MRL and other Finance areas to establish best practices. Support discrete decision-making by preparing and compiling Net Present Value (NPV) and other financial data for programs.

- Gather data, develop models, and analyze financial results.

- Work with GHH Finance, MMD Finance and MRL Finance to understand inputs, as well as interface with project leaders from the Marketing, MMD and MRL divisions.

- Estimate the financial impact for a program under various scenarios.

- Analyze complex business situations by identifying and focusing on critical variables and assumptions.

- Provide financial support to Product Development Teams (PDT) where decisions require value, cost and risk assessments. Participate in the presentation of outcomes to teams and decision-making bodies as required.

- Work with development teams and cross-divisional colleagues to ensure that product valuations are comprehensive, balanced analyses which appropriately reflect the range of potential outcomes.

- Develop materials to communicate results to financial and non-financial management.

- Responsible for the reporting and data management of Pipeline Valuation data, interpretation of third-party research related to Pharma R&D, accounting for In-Process R&D (IPR&D) (impairment testing) as well as other related special projects

- Investigate potential new financial analysis techniques to determine whether currently used valuation methods can be enhanced or new approaches utilized

Qualifications

Education :

- Minimum of a Bachelor Degree is required (preferably in Business, Finance/Accounting or Science)

- MBA strongly desired

Required Experience and Skills:

- A minimum of 5 years of demonstrated experience in an Accounting or Finance related role (preferably in biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry).

Preferred Experience and Skills:

- Knowledge of corporate finance and statistical concepts as it relates to valuation, analysis and resource allocation.

- Three or more years' expertise with financial modeling techniques in an Excel-based environment.

- Ability to provide strategic direction for business operations models

- Strong Financial acumen and negotiation skills.

- Demonstrated ability to develop, evaluate, organize, direct, and deliver on clinical study objectives in the areas of planning, finance, metric setting, and leading continuous operational improvement.

- Proactive approach to problem solving

- Results and process-driven orientation

- Understanding of pharmaceutical industry, desirable to have exposure to clinical study support and analytics.

- Demonstrated ability to build and effectively manage and motivate a team in a challenging and complex environment.

- Excellent Interpersonal skills and ability to influence, ability to build internal and external relationships, proven negotiation skills.

- Sound and balance judgment; able to assess and handle risks, decisive

- Excellent Communication skills.

- Demonstrated people management ability.
