Purpose:
Leadership: Lead the North American PerkinElmer (PKI) Diagnostics Research and Development sites in Waltham, Hopkinton and Bolton, Canada. Key technologies the Director of R&D oversees are Molecular Diagnostics (PCR), Mass Spectrometry (assays and instrumentation), Liquid Handling Automation and Microfluidics. The Director of R&D provides technical leadership for research and development projects and for business development evaluations. Most importantly provides leadership in System Architecture and Integration and fosters synergies with other PerkinElmer sites.

Technology and Innovation: Provides scientific input and support for the evaluation of new technologies, merger and acquisition targets and develops strategic plans to organically and inorganically grow the business with innovative products. Works with R&D and business leaders from all nine PerkinElmer Diagnostics sites, reviews project plans, works on problem-solving scenarios, as well as external licensing and acquisition opportunities. Synthesizes complex technical and business scenarios into descriptions and presentations targeted to PerkinElmer senior leaders. Assigns technical leaders for specific project teams. Leads the hands-on evaluation of novel external technologies to determine adequacy for acquisition.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead, evaluate and grow all teams and individuals reporting into the Director of R&D
    • Direct reports: Molecular Dx leader, Mass Spectrometry leader, CCMS leader, Hopkinton R&D Leader for Automation and Microfluidics, Bolton, Canada Mass Spec platform leader
  • Responsible for team’s talent.
    • Take all necessary measures to build a highly cooperative team of accountable, A-players with a high sense of urgency, technical excellence, understanding of the market and regulatory space, ability to communicate and the absolute will to succeed.
  • Ensure excellent collaboration within the organization
    • Currently: Austin (NGS library prep andViaCord (cord blood business), Taicang (China), Sollentuna (Sweden) and Turku (Finland) R&D, chemagen in Baesweiler, Germany (sample prep), the Director of Voice of Customer and Design excellence,
  • Ensure excellent collaboration outside the organization
    • KOLs, customers, collaboration partners and other stake holders
  • Implementation of the new Voice of Customer Process for DX Product Development in collaboration with the Director of VOC and Design Excellence
  • Ensure products are developed following Design Excellence principles (e.g. six sigma)
  • Ensure products are developed on time, on budget and on quality
  • Ensure all legal and regulatory obligations are followed and implemented
