DEPARTMENT OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT

PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR AND HEAD OF DEPARTMENT (ONE POST)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology requires the services of a dynamic person of proven academic stature and relevant management experience to lead the Department of Engineering and Technology Management. The main focus of the Department is on postgraduate studies and research is a main priority.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • The strategic, academic and operational management of the Department;
  • Promoting, planning, organizing and managing academic and research programmes and the Department’s research profile;
  • Recruiting and managing of world class personnel;
  • All financial activities including externally funded projects;
  • Playing an active role as academic leader of the discipline at a national and international level;
  • Marketing and growing the Department with the emphasis on growth on graduate level.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Associate Professor:

  • A PhD in Engineering or an engineering-related PhD in the Natural Sciences;
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer or a Professional Scientist;
  • Academic status in a relevant discipline of Engineering and Technology Management;
  • A proven research and publication record;
  • National recognition as a researcher.

 

Professor:

  • A PhD in Engineering or an engineering-related PhD in the Natural Sciences;
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer or a Professional Scientist;
  • Academic status in a relevant discipline of Engineering and Technology Management;
  • A proven research and publication record;
  • National and international recognition as a researcher.

 

Head of Department:

  • Proven experience in research management and a good publication record;
  • Experience in high-level liaison with internal and external stakeholders and professional boards;
  • Experience in managing engineering and science staff;
  • Experience in marketing of technical projects to obtain research and development contracts.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Managerial experience at a tertiary or research institution;
  • Strong leadership and communication skills;
  • International recognition;
  • An exceptional research record in one of the Department’s research specialisation fields.

 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

Candidates may be expected to make a 10 minute presentation to the Appointments Committee on his / her vision for the Department.

Although candidates will be appointed permanently as Professor or Associate Professor, the headship is a fixed-term appointment of four years. Preference will be given to the incumbent for re-appointment for a second term.
