Senior Lecturer/Lecturer: Telecommunications

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University offers leading educational and research programmes in the fields of telecommunications and wireless networking. A position of Senior Lecturer/Lecturer has become available to participate in teaching and supervision in these fields, as well as to support and develop research in the general area of telecommunications, with particular emphasis on digital telecommunication. A well-established research laboratory as well as teaching and engineering infrastructure already exists.

Duties:

  • Teaching and administration at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the fields of digital telecommunication and wireless networking, as well as general and specialised undergraduate and postgraduate modules;
  • Supervising final year projects and postgraduate (Masters and PhD) students in the fields of digital telecommunication and wireless networking;
  • Conducting research in the fields of digital telecommunication and wireless networking;
  • Establishing contact with other universities, industry and government organisations (national and international) to promote research and development programmes in the afore-mentioned fields at Stellenbosch University;
  • Performing supporting, administrative and representative roles within and outside the Department.

 

  

Requirements:

  • An applicable Bachelor's degree (such as BEng) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, as required by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) to qualify for registration as a Professional Engineer;
  • A PhD from an accredited national or international tertiary institution in the field of telecommunications;
  • The ability to teach courses dealing with subjects, including the theory of signals and systems, stochastic systems and digital and analogue communication systems;
  • A solid knowledge of and experience i, the field of telecommunications in general and digital telecommunications in particular. Previous experience in wireless communication systems will be an advantage;
  • A proven and relevant publication record in the aforementioned fields in international peer-reviewed journals and/or conference proceedings;
  • The ability to communicate effectively and to lecture general modules.

 

 

Desirable:

  • Suitable industry experience;
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer or compliance with criteria for registration;
  • Previous tertiary teaching experience, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Ability to function in a multidisciplinary environment;
  • A proven record of ability to obtain external funding for research.
