Hi Hopes is an Early Intervention Programme that aims to provide home-based support to families of deaf and hard of hearing babies. The trained Early Interventionist partners with and support families to ensure the best development of the infant or young child with a hearing loss.

The Centre for Deaf Studies located in the Wits School of Education is seeking to appoint a suitable candidate to the position of National Deaf Mentor Coordinator to support the realisation of its flagship project: Hi Hopes objectives.

 

Key requirements:

  • Degree in Teaching or Social Work or equivalent
  • 3 – 5 yrs relevant work experience in Education, government or NGO sector
  • Experience in managing/ leadership within the Deaf Community
  • Strong member of the SA Deaf Community
  • South African Sign Language fluency


Duties include:

  • Provide leadership and direction to the national Deaf Mentor team and especially the provincial Deaf mentor coordinators
  • Administration of national Deaf Mentor program re staffing, claims and interaction with Wits re salaries, HR etc.
  • Manage Internal and External Program reporting – receive and follow up on reports from Provincial Coordinators as well as provide information for Donor reports
  • Manage National meetings and Provincial Meetings where needed
  • Work with the Director and National Coordinator on strategy, planning and implementation of the Hi Hopes mission in South Africa
  • Work with the Provincial Coordinators to encourage and manage referrals to the DM programme
  • Work with the DM trainer to set up training of new Deaf Mentors
  • Assist with and provide resources for the continued education and training for existing Deaf Mentors
  • Manage quality assurance and a mentoring process in consultation with the Provincial Deaf mentor coordinators.
  • Be a Deaf Mentor to at least one family
