The Global Education Coordinator is responsible for the development and implementation of global education programs for students, faculty, staff and the wider community to gain international competencies, in particular the knowledge, skills and attitudes to fill the role of global citizen.  This position takes responsibility for designing and delivering programs with intentional learning outcomes in International House, a residence for Canadian and international students.  The Coordinator provides intercultural communication training and coaching for students and staff.  The Coordinator also makes decisions related to the content of the Certificate in International Learning, looks after administration of the Certificate and designs and delivers workshop content required for the Certificate.

 

Duties

  • Researches, conceptualizes and develops innovative programs, projects and events which meet the objectives of the Global Education Program based on the principles and methods of adult education
  • Establishes intentional learning outcomes at International House in deliberate collaboration with staff and residents and designs curriculum and programs to achieve these learning outcomes
  • Identifies student leaders in International House and works closely with them to develop a strong International House community, students’ association and alumni association
  • Delivers key activities in International House (in collaboration with residents)
  • Mentors International House residents to develop skills in global leadership, intercultural communication and event planning
  • Works closely with Residence Life staff and serve as a key member of the International House Management Committee
  • Maintains relationships with International House alumni and oversee and support the development of programs for their engagement in International House
  • Develops and delivers training in intercultural communication for various audiences, including students and staff
  • Designs and delivers content for workshops required for students qualifying for the Certificate in International Learning
  • Oversees the day-to-day administration of the Certificate in International Learning; develop and maintain records for all registered students
  • Advises students on appropriate programs and experiences to meet their learning goals and attainment of the Certificate in International Learning
  • Stays abreast of current events, monitor discussions of global and intercultural issues in the media, the academy and the non-governmental sector and identify topical issues and areas of interest to faculty, students and the community, around which to develop programs and events
  • Identifies resources (speakers, facilitators, partners, sponsors) on and off campus and initiates, develops and cultivates relationships with faculty, staff, students, community members, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and businesses to encourage and facilitate their participation, contribution and collaboration in programming
  • Initiates invitations, negotiate speaking fees/honoraria and make all necessary arrangements for visiting speakers; acts as host during their visits
  • Facilitates (MC) events, prepares introductions, moderates question and answer periods, etc.; organizes logistics, e.g., venues, room set up, audiovisual equipment and catering
  • Troubleshoots in unexpected circumstances or when problems arise
  • Prepares and administers project budgets; monitors expenditures to ensure programs stay within budget; prepares narrative and financial project reports; researches funding sources and write grant proposals; negotiates and prepares sponsorship agreements
  • Identifies opportunities for volunteer or student staff involvement in programs
  • Designs volunteer and temporary and/or part-time staff positions that are meaningful and will support program activities; evaluates volunteer and student staff involvement in programs and use findings to improve future positions
  • Selects and trains temporary and/or part-time staff and volunteers
  • Develops communication strategies for events to ensure broad awareness of available programs; edits and prepares effective promotional materials
  • Cultivates relationships with media contacts on and off campus
  • Completes evaluation of all programs and analyze data for use in improving future program content and delivery

 

Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate degree; coursework related to intercultural relations, intercultural communications, social justice education and/or adult education preferred; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
  • 2-3  years of related experience in special event management
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to global citizenship
  • Strong background and knowledge of goals and principles of: global education/education for global citizenship; intercultural communication theory, practice and training; current affairs and global issues
  • Demonstrated understanding of global education in a post-secondary institution
  • Experience in planning, implementing and evaluating global education programs
  • Experience in intercultural communication training
  • Familiarity with University and community resources
  • Experience managing, supervising and mentoring volunteers and staff
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in marketing and communication strategies and media relations
  • Experience with budgeting and financial management
  • Ability to work under tight time constraints
  • Ability to make decisions based on previous experience, established precedents and policies
  • Computer competency, including fluency with word-processing, PowerPoint, spreadsheets, databases, social media, document sharing and the internet
  • Valid Class 5 or 4 Driver's License preferred
