We welcome you to apply for a permanent position as Associate Professor in Economics at the Department of Economics, University of Bergen.

Department of Economics (http://www.uib.no/econ) is one of seven departments at the Faculty of Social Sciences. The Department offers teaching of economics at all levels, and lead the students to the degree of bachelor, master and PhD. Research and teaching at the Department cover a broad spectrum of sub-disciplines. The Department’s methodological core competencies are within applied micro econometrics and incentive theory. Based on these competencies the Department has research groups in the following three fields:

  • Industrial organization and economic organization

  • Welfare, social insurance and health

  • Natural resources, environmental and development economics

Description of position

The department aims to strengthen its academic expertise and breadth. The vacant position is not tied to any particular research group but it is expected that the successful candidate will contribute to strengthening the department’s research and educational profiles. The associate professor will be hired with a responsibility to teach at all levels, and to engage in other tasks at the Department.

Qualifications and personal qualities

  • The successful applicant must have a doctoral degree in economics or equivalent qualifications.

  • Applicants must have demonstrated their ability to publish research at a high international level beyond their PhD dissertation.

  • The evaluation of the applicant’s scientific work will focus primarily on research published last five years.

  • The applicants must be willing and able to teach compulsory courses at both the undergraduate and the graduate level, including tutoring of master degree and PhD students.

  • Personal aptitude will be of great importance. Cooperative skills, as well as future plans for research and ambitions when it comes to strengthening the academic expertise of the department in a longer time perspective will be of high importance.

  • Basic teaching training is a requirement. The appointee to this position will be offered appropriate pedagogical training if this requirement has not been met previous to appointment.


The teaching language will normally be Norwegian. The successful applicant must be able to teach in Norwegian or one of the other Scandinavian languages within two years of his/her appointment.

  • Salary at pay grade 60-68 (code 1011/pay range 24, alternative 4) in the state salary scale. This currently amounts to an annual salary of NOK 510.100 – 591.400,- before taxes. Further increase in salary will depend on seniority. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well qualified applicant.

  • Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
