There is a vacancy for a position as Professor in Social Anthropology at the Department of Social Anthropology.

The Department of Social Anthropology is one of Europe’s largest in the discipline, currently with 15 professors and associate professors, 7 post-doctoral fellows and about 30 PhD candidates. Several major research projects are based at the department, including an ERC Advanced Grant project on Egalitarianism. Work tasks/research field:

The Department of Social Anthropology aims to develop further excellence through theoretically ambitious and methodological innovative research that builds, and yet expands on, current research at the Department. We are therefore seeking to hire a professor in social anthropology to strengthen the Department's research on globalization, class and inequality. The successful candidate should address these issues comparatively through ethnographic and historical analysis, and – in particular - have the capacity to unlock the potential for class-oriented perspectives on ongoing projects at the Department.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must have a doctoral degree in anthropology or equivalent qualifications.

  • A significant academic output is required beyond that required for a doctorate. The research must be of high quality, and reflect both breadth and depth. The evaluation of the applicant’s scientific work will focus primarily on research published the last five years.

  • Ability to initiate and lead research projects, experience in coordinating research activities and strategic work.

  • The applicants must be willing and able to teach compulsory courses at both the undergraduate and the graduate level.

  • Personal aptitude will be of great importance. Cooperative skills, as well as future plans for research, and ambitions when it comes to teaching will be of added value.

  • Basic pedagogical training is a requirement for the position. The successful applicant will be offered training if this requirement is not met prior to employment.

There is a vacancy for a postdoctoral fellow position at Geophysical Institute / Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research within global and regional climate variability. The postdoctoral fellow position is for a period of 4 years starting fall 2016. The Centre for Climate Dynamics at the Bjerknes Centre funds the position.

Project/work tasks

The project will consist of two parts; detection and attribution of climate change, and teleconnection from tropical Pacific to high latitudes. Both observations and archived climate model output will be used. The work will concentrate on:

  • Assessing the relationship between global temperature change and natural and forced climate drivers
  • Identifying the roles of ocean heat uptake and storage in evolution of global mean temperatures
  • Studying the relationship between high latitude climatic trends and sea surface state in the tropical Pacific
  • Performing sensitivity experiments with sea surface temperature perturbations in various parts of the tropical Pacific using atmospheric models with and without active ocean modules.

 

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a PhD or an equivalent degree within physical oceanography, meteorology, applied mathematics/fluid dynamics or related fields, or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment within these topics prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded before employment
  • The applicant must document theoretical and practical skills related to large scale ocean and / or atmosphere dynamics
  • The applicant should preferably have relevant experience of analysis of large four-dimensional data sets describing ocean and/or atmosphere
  • The applicant should preferably have experience from climate modelling
  • The applicant must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and to demonstrate good collaborative skills
  • The applicant must be proficient in both written and oral English

 

About the position of postdoctoral fellow

The position of postdoctoral fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. The fixed-term period for this position is four years, including in total 25 % mandatory duties in the form of teaching or equivalent work. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral fellow at the same institution.

After appointment, the project plan, including a schedule, must be prepared in cooperation with the project manager / supervisor. It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.
