Job Details

There is a vacancy for a PhD position at the Geophysical Institute within physical oceanography. The position is for a fixed-term period of 4 years and is connected to the project «Overturning in the Nordic Seas».

About the project/work tasks

The PhD position is connected to the project «Overturning in the Nordic Seas» supported by Bergen Research Foundation. The overall objective is to study the coupled ocean-atmosphere climate system in the Nordic Seas, a region that is of critical importance to the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation but very sensitive to climate change. The objective will be achieved primarily through processing and analysis of existing and new data sets as well as numerical modelling and theoretical constraints. The observations are moored and shipboard measurements of velocity, hydrography, and geochemical tracers as well as hydrographic profiles from autonomous gliders and floats. The processes of interest include open ocean convection, boundary current dynamics, and oceanic response to atmospheric forcing.

The candidate will take part in research cruises to the Iceland and Greenland Seas of approximately one month duration in summer 2016 and winter 2017, and possibly additional shorter cruises to the same region. The candidate will also spend approximately 6 months visiting international collaborators at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a master's degree or the equivalent in physical oceanography, meteorology or a related field (for examples applied mathematics or physics), or must have submitted his/her master's thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the master's degree has been awarded.

  • A deep understanding of physical processes in the ocean and good skills in mathematics and programming are required.

  • Experience in oceanographic field work as well as processing and analysis of moored and shipboard hydrographic, geochemical tracer, and velocity measurements is an advantage.

  • You should be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others.

  • You should be proficient in both written and oral English.

About the PhD position

The duration of the PhD position is 4 years, of which 25 per cent of the time each year comprises obligatory duties associated with research, teaching and dissemination of results. The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a recruitment position.

About the research training

As a PhD Candidate, you must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. A final plan for the implementation of the research training must be approved by the faculty within three months after you have commenced in the position. It is a condition that you satisfy the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme at the University of Bergen.

We can offer:

  • A good and professionally challenging working environment.

  • Salary at pay grade 50 (currently equal to NOK 430 500 gross p.a.) upon appointment (code 1017). Further promotions are made according to length of service in the position.

  • Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

  • A position in an inclusive workplace (IA enterprise).

  • Good welfare benefits.

Your application must include:

  • A brief account of your research interests and motivation for applying for the position.

  • The names and contact information for two reference persons. One of these should be the main advisor for the master's thesis or equivalent thesis.

  • CV

  • Transcripts and diplomas showing completion of the bachelor's and master's degrees, or official confirmation that the master's thesis has been submitted.

  • Relevant certificates/references.

  • A list of any works of a scientific nature (publication list).

  • Any publications in your name.

The application and appendices with certified translations into English or a Scandinavian language must be uploaded at Jobbnorge. Applications sent to individuals by email will not be considered.
