4 PhD-scholarships in Medieval Studies

The announcement is part of the strategic work of the Faculty to develop Medieval Studies as a strong and broad area of research at the University of Bergen. For the same reason, the Faculty envisages a broadly composed group of PhD candidates representing a range of disciplines. Applicants should propose research projects that have relevance for the study of the Middle Ages in Northern Europe, though their main focus may lie elsewhere. The project should be within one of the disciplines or fields of study in the Faculty where Medieval topics are covered and a supervisor is available.

To be qualified for the scholarship, applicants must have the equivalent of a Norwegian MA degree (i.e. 3 years bachelor and 2 years master, 300 ECTS altogether) that is relevant for the PhD project. The degree must have been obtained at the time of the application.

In the ranking of the applicants the following criteria will be applied:

• the quality and significance of the research project
• the applicant’s academic qualifications and training

In the ranking of similarly qualified applicants, strategic considerations will be given weight. There will be emphasis on personal characteristics such as the ability to work independently and structured and have good cooperation skills.

Salary

Salary will be in accordance with level 50 (code 1017/20.8) on the Norwegian government salary scale, currently NOK 430.200 – gross p.a. following ordinary meriting regulations.

A compulsory 2% contribution to the State Pension Fund (Statens pensjonskasse) will be deducted from gross salary.

About the research training

As a PhD Candidate, you must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. It is a condition that you satisfy the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme at the University of Bergen.

About the positions

The duration of the PhD position is 4 years, of which 25 per cent of the time each year comprises obligatory duties associated with research, teaching and dissemination of results. The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a recruitment position.

The successful applicants will be expected to relocate to the University of Bergen and conform to the regulations that apply to the positions.
