JOB PURPOSE:

To undertake research in line with the School’s research strategy, to teach at postgraduate level and to contribute to the School’s administration/outreach activity and particularly in relation to the School’s PGCE international programme. Appointments may be made at Ac2 or Ac3 level, depending on qualifications and experience.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Develop teaching methods, design course units and deliver teaching and assessment activities including lectures, coursework and workshops as required by the HoS and particularly for the PGCE international programme.
  • Select appropriate assessment instruments and criteria, assess the work and progress of students by reference to the criteria and provide constructive feedback to students.
  • Supervise and assess students on placement in schools.
  • Supervision of masters dissertation students.
  • Seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback.
  • Help to develop an innovative PGCE international programme and contribute to curriculum development.
  • May oversee research students as directed by Head of School.
  • Develop and plan an area of personal research and expertise, and/or undertake research under supervision within a specific research project or as a member of a research team.
  • Publish research in refereed journals etc. and present work at national/international conferences.
  • Where appropriate, source and secure external funding in collaboration with others from the relevant funding bodies to ensure continued growth of the School’s research profile.
  • Provide guidance to other staff and students on own specialist area.
  • Contribute to the research strategies of the School.
  • Administration/Contribution to the Community:
  • Coordinate the international strand of the PGCE programme.
  • Provide pastoral care for students within own area to ensure that all issues are dealt with in a timely, sympathetic and effective manner.
  • Be responsible for the record-keeping associated with teaching and the preparation of teaching materials.
  • Carry out designated routine School administrative duties, including, for example, participation in committee work, assisting in the process of admissions, etc.
  • Contribute to the School’s outreach strategy by developing external links.

 

Planning and Organising:

  • Plan and manage own teaching and tutorials as agreed with Head of School.
  • Design/update modules in line with School’s teaching strategy.
  • Plan and prepare research papers to meet publication deadlines. Prepare research proposals for submission for external funding.

 

Resource Management Responsibilities:

  • Use teaching and research resources as required.
  • Manage use of resources for research and teaching in a resource-efficient manner and with a view to reducing the University’s
  • green impact.
  • Assist in the development of skills and competence in others.
  • Act as mentor for students.

 

Internal and External Relationships:

  • Member of the School Board and Examination Boards and such committees as are relevant to administrative duties.
  • Collaborate with other staff within School.
  • Develop partnerships with schools and links with external networks, for example, with external examiners and educational bodies.
  • Contribute to the School’s outreach programme by establishing links with local community groups, etc.

 

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Honours degree in a subject relevant to the school curriculum in International Schools.
  • Recognised teaching qualification.
  • Hold or be about to obtain a PhD, EdD or equivalent.
  • At least five years’ experience of teaching.
  • Demonstrable ability to undertake the leading role in the School’s PGCE international course commensurate with stage of career.
  • Research interests that are sustainable and which complement or enhance research activities within the School of Education.
  • Demonstrable ability to publish high quality peer-reviewed research outputs commensurate with stage of career.
  • Experience of lecturing or teaching, commensurate with stage of career, in a context other than a school classroom e.g. contributing to teaching and supervision in higher education and/or involvement in the professional development of others.
  • Ability to make a significant contribution to the delivery of the PGCE international programme.
  • Demonstrable ability to devise a teaching programme and evidence of skills in managing staff and resources.
  • Ability to engage confidently with and inspire beginning teachers on the teaching of English.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to liaise with students, colleagues and school partners.
  • Engagement in continuous professional development.
  • Ability to assess and organise resources.
  • Willingness to travel as required.
  • Ability to meet the mobility requirements of the post.

 

 

 

 

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

  • Membership of an appropriate professional and/or teaching body.
  • Experience of teaching 11-18 year olds in school.
  • Experience of leadership, management and assessment in a school or school-related context.
  • Experience of supervising masters and doctoral students. Evidence of successfully attracting external research income.
  • Experience of teaching postgraduate courses in higher education.
  • Experience of planning and delivering postgraduate/undergraduate course for distance learning students.
  • Experience as a programme coordinator or other significant School-level leadership role.
  • Demonstrable understanding of an education system other than in Northern Ireland and evident interest in a wide range of educational issues.
