Job Details

JOB PURPOSE:

To undertake research in line with the School’s research strategy, to teach and supervise at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and to contribute to the School’s administration / outreach activity.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Teaching:

  • Deliver teaching and assessment activities including lectures, seminars, tutorials, setting/marking coursework etc, to undergraduates and postgraduates, including specialist courses in Medieval Irish history (c.400-c.1500) and the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations.
  • Select appropriate assessment instruments and criteria, assess the work and progress of students by reference to the subject criteria and provide constructive feedback to students.
  • Seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback from students.
  • Plan and develop independent and collaborative teaching contributions, and contribute to the design or revision of course units.
  • Contribute to curriculum development and the enhancement of teaching quality within subject, school and university.

 

Research:

  • Develop and plan an area of personal research and expertise in the field of Medieval Irish history (c.400-c.1500).
  • Publish research of high quality in appropriate refereed journals etc. and present work at conferences.
  • Provide guidance to other staff and students on own specialist area.
  • Develop research collaborations with colleagues in other institutions.
  • Contribute to research grant applications to external funding bodies as appropriate. Administration/Contribution to the Community:
  • Carry out designated School administrative duties, including for example, committee work, course administration, etc.
  • Provide pastoral care for students in the School and ensure that all issues are dealt with in a timely, sympathetic and effective manner.
  • Be responsible for the record keeping associated with teaching and the preparation of teaching.
  • Contribute to the School’s outreach strategy by developing external links.

 

Planning and Organising:

  • Plan and manage own teaching as agreed with Head of School / mentor.
  • Co-ordinate with others (such as support staff, academic colleagues and teaching assistants), to ensure student needs and expectations are met.
  • Design / update modules in line with School’s teaching strategy.
  • Plan and prepare research outputs to meet publication and research assessment deadlines.

 

Resource Management Responsibilities:

  • Manage own teaching, research and administrative demands under general supervision of Head of School.
  • Support students in the capacity of personal tutor.
  • Assist in the development of skills and competence in others.
  • Use teaching and research resources as required.
  • Act as mentor to research staff and teaching assistants, as required.

 

Internal and External Relationships:

  • Communicate complex and conceptual ideas to students and peers using relevant skills and a range of media.
  • Membership of School Board and Examination Board and such committees as are relevant to administrative duties.
  • Contribute to development of external links or networks to share information and ideas, and build relationships for future activities.
  • Contribute to School’s outreach programme.
  • Contribute to School’s undergraduate and postgraduate recruitment activities.

 

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Primary or higher degree in History or a cognate subject.
  • Completed Ph.D. in History or a cognate subject.
  • Research outputs of international quality (as defined by the criteria of REF) published or accepted for publication, demonstrating, to a degree appropriate to stage of career, the potential to enhance the research culture of the School, and its performance in REF.
  • A research focus in Medieval Irish history in the period between c.400 and c.1500.
  • A clear agenda for future research.
  • Experience of teaching at University level appropriate to stage of career. Demonstrable ability to develop and teach specialist courses on the history of Medieval Ireland (c.400-c.1500).
  • Demonstrable ability to contribute to the development and teaching of collaborative courses in Medieval history.
  • Demonstrable capacity to contribute to the development and teaching of the Medieval and early Modern strand of the MA in History.
  • Demonstrable ability to carry out administrative duties appropriate to post.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • High level of analytical capability.
  • Able to work outside normal office hours if necessary.

 

 

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

  • Experience in lecturing.
  • Experience in teaching at masters level.
  • Experience of curriculum design and review.
