Job Details

JOB PURPOSE:

To undertake research in line with the School’s research strategy and/or to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and to contribute to School administration/outreach activity.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Deliver teaching and assessment activities within area of specialism including lectures, setting/marking coursework, practicals, and field work to undergraduates and postgraduates.
  • Select appropriate assessment instruments and criteria, assess the work and progress of students by reference to the criteria and provide constructive feedback to students.
  • Seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback.
  • Oversee research students as directed by Head of School.
  • Supervise practical work where it is part of the course, and advise students on techniques.
  • Plan and develop independent teaching contributions and contribute to the design or revision of course units.
  • Develop appropriate teaching approaches and contribute to curriculum development. Develop and plan an area of research/scholarship and expertise in the field of Sonic Arts and contribute to the research output of the Sonic Arts Research Centre.
  • Contribute to and publish research/scholarship in appropriate refereed journals and conferences.
  • Seek external funding, in collaboration with peers, from relevant funding bodies to ensure continued growth of the Sonic Arts Research Centre research profile.
  • Direct, coach and develop students within specialist area.
  • Collaborate on original scholarship with colleagues in other institutions including those of strategic importance to the Sonic Arts Research Centre.
  • Support colleagues and students on developing design and prototyping for ongoing research projects Administration/Contribution to the Community:
  • Contribute to the School’s outreach strategy by developing external links.
  • Provide pastoral care for students within own area to ensure that all issues are dealt with in a timely, sympathetic and effective manner.
  • Carry out designated routine School administrative duties, including, for example, committee work, course administration etc.
  • Be responsible for the record–keeping associated with teaching and the preparation of teaching materials.

 

Planning and Organising:

  • Plan and manage own teaching and tutorials as agreed with Head of School/mentor.
  • Design/update modules in line with School’s education strategy.
  • Plan and prepare scholarly outputs to meet deadlines.
  • Prepare proposals for submission for external funding. Plan and deliver educational events.

 

Resource Management Responsibilities:

  • Use teaching and research resources, laboratories and workshops as required.
  • Co-manage, where appropriate, with grant holder external funding relating to research project.
  • Act as mentor for students.

 

Internal and External Relationships:

  • Be a member of the School Board and Examination Board and such committees relevant to administrative duties.
  • Collaborate with other staff within School.
  • Develop links or join external networks to share information and ideas.
  • Contribute to the School’s outreach programme by establishing links with local community groups, industries etc.

 

 

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • At least a 1 honours degree in a relevant field.
  • A completed PhD in Interaction Design, HCI, Physical Computing, Performance Technologies or other relevant fields. (near completion will be considered if viva date has been set).
  • A research/scholarship record in practice/publications, peer reviewed journals /conference papers or other forms of outputs, appropriate to stage of career.
  • Research/Scholarship interests that are sustainable and which complement or enhance activities of SARC.
  • A minimum of 3 years scholarship experience in one or more of the following areas: design and prototyping, physical computing, HCI, interaction design, Internet of Things, game design, software design, performance technologies, embedded systems.
  • Potential to earn external income.
  • Ability to contribute to Research Excellence Framework (REF) – Lecturer only. Teaching experience at tertiary level appropriate to stage of career.
  • Ability to contribute to broader management and administrative processes.
  • High level of analytical capability.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Engagement in continuous professional development.
  • Ability to assess and organise resources.
  • Ability to work outside normal working hours to attend concerts and related events.

 

 

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

  • PGCHET and/or membership of an appropriate professional and/or teaching body eg. HEA. Interdisciplinary experience.
  • Interest in knowledge transfer and outreach activities leading to impact outside academia.
  • Evidence of design development and prototyping role in large-scale research projects.
  • Experience in course design and programme administration.
  • Experience of teaching topics such interaction design, performance systems, physical computing in the creative arts, coding for artists.
  • Experience in international event organisation.
