Job Details

Applications are invited for a 12-month fixed-term Research Associate position, available immediately, to conduct EPSRC funded research in theoretical chemistry under the supervision of Dr Grant Hill in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Sheffield.

The Role

This position will involve developing the theoretical chemistry tools necessary to accurately and efficiently produce potential energy surfaces for cold and ultracold chemistry. High-accuracy explicitly correlated methods such as CCSD(T)-F12b and MRCI-F12 will be used in the design and optimisation of new basis sets for the alkali and alkaline earth metals, and to develop a composite potential energy surface protocol. The work will focus on tailoring these developments in order to carry out accurate calculations on systems of interest to other theoretical and experimental groups working in the field of ultracold chemistry. Collaboration with these groups will form an important part of the project.

Person Specifications

  • You will have a good publication track record and be a highly motivated, independent research worker and a strong team player.
  • Supervision of PhD and/or undergraduate students is required and the ability to write high-quality first-draft scientific papers and give excellent oral presentations is essential.
  • You will have a good honours degree in Chemistry (or equivalent experience and have a PhD in Theoretical or Computational Chemistry (or a closely related discipline, with experience of application of computational quantum chemical techniques, such as coupled cluster theory or density functional theory.
