Job Details
Job Purpose
Contribute to internationally leading research and other research-related activities within the School in human-computer interaction, in areas complementary or supplementary to those of the existing group. Pursue individual research programmes, working as part of a larger research team, seeking external funding, publishing journal and conference papers, conducting outreach to business and industry.
Contribute to learning and teaching activities in the school, e.g. by lecturing and tutoring of core computer science, as well as computational approaches to human behaviour, participating in or leading curriculum review and development, designing and developing new modules, supervising student projects at BSc, MSc and PhD levels, etc.
Contribute to the management, administration and smooth running of the HCI Centre and School of Computer Science through leadership and enterprise activities, and assist in Applicant Visitor Days, Open Days and other School events.
Person Specification
Essential:
- A PhD in computer science, psychology or a closely related field. (Applicants who have submitted or are about to submit their theses will also be considered). In exceptional cases, high quality research publications or industrial research achievements may be acceptable as an alternative to a PhD.
- Internationally outstanding research record (or indicative potential in the case of a new PhD graduate) in computer science, or a related discipline, as evidenced by publications in leading international journals or conference proceedings in these fields. Specifically, able to submit a minimum of 12* for the REF submission (4x3*papers): we would expect candidates to be at 14-16*s.
- Excellence or the potential for excellence in teaching at Master's level, and core computer science modules at undergraduate level that may or may not be in the candidates research areas.
- Enthusiasm and ability for interdisciplinary and collaborative working.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Desirable:
- Evidence of high impact of past research.
- Established ability or evidence of potential to attract PhD students.
- Established ability or evidence of potential to bring in external grants from research councils, academic charities, and/or industry.
- Established ability or evidence of potential to conduct outreach and consultancy activities to business, industry or the wider community.
- Demonstrated ability to balance long-term, basic research with relatively short-term applied projects.
- Experience in developing and implementing research led curricula in a research intensive university.
- Excellent organisation skills and the desire to use such skills in the administration of the school.
