Job Details

The University of Bristol has a strong record of academic research in the nuclear energy sector and works closely with major industry partners. In order to further support these activities and cement Bristol as the primary university for nuclear related activity in the South West of the UK, the South West Nuclear Energy Research and Teaching Hub is being developed, driven by a cooperation between the Faculties of Science and Engineering, and aided by recent HEFCE investment, University funds and industry support. The development of under- and postgraduate teaching in nuclear science and engineering is an integral part of this vision. The Bristol MSc in Nuclear Science and Engineering was introduced in academic year 2015/16. This interdisciplinary degree is jointly taught by the Faculties of Science and Engineering, and delivers a solid grounding in the Science and Engineering principles underpinning the global nuclear industry.

Dr Tom Scott, Head of the Interface Analysis Centre (IAC) and Director of the Nuclear Hub in Bristol has recently been awarded a Royal Academy of Engineering Senior Research Fellowship. This lectureship will both support the research activities of the IAC and Nuclear Hub as well as provide cover for Dr Scott’s teaching duties during the 5 year duration of the fellowship.

The lecturer will be a member of the Interface Analysis Centre within the School of Physics. The lecturer will be expected to undertake an independent research programme in the area of Nuclear Materials Fuels and Fuels Cycle broadly aligned with and supporting the activities of Dr Scott. They will lead world ranking research projects in nuclear materials, ideally oriented towards environmental degradation, performance and detection; encompassing multiple fuel cycle aspects (i.e. operation, storage and disposal). They will teach units on the MSc in Nuclear Science and Engineering as well as at undergraduate level within the School of Physics and will carry out related academic management tasks. The successful candidate will be expected to teach core physics units at undergraduate level, deliver tutorials and supervise final year undergraduate research projects. Specific teaching responsibilities include Dr Scott’s Nuclear Fuel Cycle unit on the Nuclear MSc programme.

The School of Physics welcomes applications from all qualified candidates. The School holds an Athena Swan Bronze award and Juno practitioner status from the Institute of Physics in recognition of our commitment to advancing women’s careers in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment in higher education and research and for ensuring equal opportunity for all.

The post is full-time but we welcome applications from those considering flexible working whether full- or part-time. Funding is currently available until 31st January 2021. Interviews are expected to take place in late June / early July 2016.
