Applications are invited for a position of Research Support Assistant in the School of Experimental Psychology, University of Bristol. This is a full-time position with a duration of 12 months. The post is one of two associated with a three-year research project entitled “Improving literacy outcomes in struggling readers: A randomised control study of a morphological intervention”, which is supported by a grant from the Nuffield Foundation to Professor Colin Davis and Professor Jeffrey Bowers (see http://www.bristol.ac.uk/expsych/research/processes/morphproject/). The project involves a randomised control trial to test the relative efficacy of two different literacy interventions. The intervention will be delivered by school teaching assistants, who will be trained on the interventions by specialists during the course of a four-day workshop in September 2016.

The successful applicant will have a degree in Psychology or a relevant subject area. Experience of working with children and teachers in educational, clinical or health-related research would be highly desirable. Previous experience with trials and/or standardised assessments would be a distinct advantage, as would a background in literacy education, language disorders and/or the psychology of language. The post requires excellent organisational, communication and presentation skills.

The successful applicant’s main tasks will be:

  • Day-to-day assistance with the trial, including regular and frequent school visits
  • Development of training materials for teaching assistants
  • Testing participants
  • Assisting with organising training workshops for teaching assistants
  • Working with teaching assistants to provide guidance as required
  • Coordinating with casual employees who will assist with testing
  • Assistance with production of post-trial materials, including a DVD
