PhD Studentship - Thermolectric Energy Harvesting for wearable elctronics

Chemistry

Location:  Highfield Campus
Closing Date:   Thursday 30 June 2016
Reference:  713816EB

PhD Supervisor: Dr Iris Nandhakumar

Co supervisor: Prof. Neil White

Applications are invited for a prestigious international PhD Singapore A star studentship to work on an exciting interdisciplinary project between the Schools of Chemistry and Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton and the Institute of Materials Research (IMRE) in Singapore.

The project is funded for 4 years and welcomes applicants from the UK and EU who have or expect to obtain at least an upper second class degree in either Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics or related discipline. The 4 year PhD programme will require successful applicants to split their their time between the University of Southampton and IMRE in Singapore and will involve two year periods in both Southampton and Singapore. The final PhD degree will be awarded by the University of Southampton.

The project is aimed at developing a novel flexible thermoelectric (TE) energy harvesting generator to power wearable electronic devices and sensors.  Wearable computers or devices have been hailed as the next generation of mobile electronic gadgets, from smart watches to smart glasses to smart pacemakers.  For example Seiko have produced a wrist-watch powered by body heat driven by a TE device and researchers have demonstrated harvesting sufficient energy from body heat to power a wireless ECG system using such modules. TE generators have enormous potential to realize wearable self-powered electronic devices as they represent an integrated power source that does not require recharging or replacement and will last the lifetime of the application and can convert heat into usefulelectricity.

Due to funding restrictions this position is only open to UK/EU applicants

Applications for an MPhil/PhD in Chemistry should be submitted online at https://studentrecords.soton.ac.uk/BNNRPROD/bzsksrch.P_Login?pos=4990&majr=4990&term=201617#_ga=1.84025945.1503326877.1417523986
