PhD Studentship: Novel Remote Sensing Strategies for the Active Control of Sound Radiation

Signal Processing & Control Research Group

Location:  Highfield Campus
Closing Date:   Friday 20 January 2017
Reference:  681216KR

Project Reference: ISVR-SPCG-119

Project Themes: Mechatronics, Signal Progressing and Control, Acoustics

A fully funded industrial CASE studentship is available for a high quality student to work on the development of novel remote sensing strategies for the active control of sound radiation.

This is an extremely exciting area of current research, which aims to improve upon current active structural acoustic control strategies by developing novel methods of sensing the radiated sound field.

Active structural acoustic control systems currently use accelerometers on the structure to infer information about the far-field radiated pressure. However, such systems require a preliminary calibration phase that would require a series of acoustic measurements at far-field locations. This project will investigate novel sensing strategies that avoid the need for this complex calibration phase. In particular, the project will investigate a variety of advanced sensing technologies that are based on optical, acoustical and structural measurements. The developed sensing strategies will ultimately be integrated within a practical active control system and the performance will be validated through real-world experimental trials.

This project is supported by a large industrial collaborator, which provides a wide range of potential opportunities for the successful candidate. In particular, the strong industrial connection helps to ensure that the research will have a direct impact on real-world engineering.

This position also benefits from a tax-free stipend of between £17,000 and £20,000 depending on the successful candidate’s previous experience. This includes the standard EPSRC studentship of £14,057 and a top-up from the industrial sponsor.

The successful candidate will be based in the Signal Processing and Control Group of the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research. This is home to an internationally renowned research group working in diverse areas of signal processing and control.

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Dr Jordan Cheer, Signal Processing and Control Group, Email: j.cheer@soton.ac.uk  Tel: +44 (0) 2380 59 4934.
