Job Description

We offer a post doctorial scientist position to support our department in the area of Life Cycle Assessment. You will participate in the InSciTe team working on renewable Adipic Acid from Levulinic Acid (LA2AA project). Levulinic acid, which can be made from biomass, could be a key building block for both fuel and material production. The project team investigates the possibilities to make known building blocks for materials such as polyamides, which are used in a number of applications from car parts to nylon stockings. The UM post-doc will be responsible for the LCA studies for the whole levulinic acid to adipic acid process and will collaborate with scientists from DSM and Eindhoven University of Technology.

You will be appointed to the department of Biobased Materials, which is part of the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences. You will operate from the Brightlands Chemelot Campus laboratories situated at Europe’s second biggest industrial chemical site, where UM is closely interconnected with surrounding industries.

 

Requirements

  • To be the successful post-doc scientist you will possess the following:
  • PhD in Life Cycle Assessment, Life Cycle Management or similar quantitative environmental benchmarking
  • A background in the use of Life Cycle Assessment and software tools such as Simapro or Gabi
  • Proven track record in the use of LCA for evaluating environmental impacts
  • Knowledge and experience in the area of chemistry and/or biobased materials is preferred
  • Keen to apply his/her scientific expertise but also open to work on biobased product development
  • Excellent communications skills that support the work in a multidisciplinary project team.
  • Inventive, creative, flexible, result driven, independent and highly motivated

 

Conditions

We offer you fulltime employment for the duration of 1 year. The gross monthly salary is in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement of the Dutch Universities (preliminary scale 10 or 11), depending on your experience. The offered position is within the project “Adipic Acid from Levulinic Acid” of the InSciTe biobased program and the post-doc will be employed by thedepartment of Biobased Materials of the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences from Maastricht University.

The mission of the Biobased Materials department is to promote world-class multidisciplinary research and education in the field of biobased materials, by training students with the multiple skills needed to be future leaders in the field, and creating the research breakthroughs that will enable the utilization of sustainable and renewable materials for advanced materials applications. The multidisciplinary team draws together scientists with expertise along the value chain of biobased materials. Our department is situated on the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Geleen, NL.
