Job Description

FASoS is seeking an assistant professor with demonstrated excellence in teaching and research in European Public Policy with a special focus on EU Public Affairs, European public administration, lobbying and public policy analysis.

Research is carried out within the context of the Research Institute for Arts and Social Sciences and, in particular, relating to the interdisciplinary research programme of Politics and Culture in Europe. S/He is expected to develop international research projects and to attract external funding. 

S/He will contribute to the teaching and coordination of courses and supervision of internships, projects and theses in the Bachelor European Studies, the Master European Public Affairs, the Master European Studies and the Research Master European Studies of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The division of teaching and research duties follows the regular division used at the Faculty of 60% teaching and management and 40% research. The research time can be extended through external fundraising.

Requirements

The candidate will have a PhD degree in the field of Political Science. Fluency in English is a prerequisite, while non-Dutch speaking applicants should be willing to learn Dutch.

The candidate displays outstanding quality in research and is open to an interdisciplinary approach. S/He has a relevant international network and a track record or potential for grant acquisition. International peer reviewed academic publications are imperative.

The candidate is an experienced and enthusiastic teacher and has demonstrated ability in thesis supervision and teaching coordination roles. Experience with course development is an asset. The candidate is able to stimulate student learning and to maximize student participation in our system of small-scale problem based learning (PBL). Experience with teaching international classrooms is preferable.

The candidate is expected to be a team player. S/He has an open, effective management style and is ready to fulfil an administrative role in the faculty.

The successful candidate will be appointed as an assistant professor who will be on a 6-year tenure track.

Your workload will be the normal workload for the position of assistant professor. Currently this implies 60% teaching – and 40% research activities.

In the 6-year tenure track employment, candidates will have ample opportunity to demonstrate their talents, approach, constructive attitude and performance. Subsequently, there will be the possibility to apply for tenure (appointment for an indefinite period of time) in the position of assistant professor.

Remuneration will be according to standard salary levels, depending on education and relevant work experience. This implies a minimum of € 3.044,-- and a maximum of € 4.654,-- gross per month for a full-time appointment of 38 hours per week (salary scale 10-11, Dutch Universities Conditions of Employment).

Each year the standard salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.

You have to be willing to move to (the vicinity of) Maastricht. If you do not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings) you will be eligible for an allowance for moving costs. If you do not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings) you might be eligible for an allowance for alternative housing.

Other secondary conditions include e.g. a pension scheme and partially paid parental leave.

Department

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) has about 250 staff members, and over 1,800 students. More than 75% of the students are non-Dutch (almost 100 different nationalities). All programmes are offered in English and some are also offered in Dutch. FASoS offers two 3-year Bachelor’s programmes: Arts and Culture and European Studies. It also offers six different 1-year Master’s programmes and two 2-year research Master’s programmes.
Its Graduate School takes in around 10 PhD students each year. Research is organised around four programmes: Politics and Culture in Europe; Maastricht University Science, Technology and Society Studies; Arts, Media and Culture; and Globalisation, Transnationalism and Development. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is housed in several recently renovated 18th-century buildings in the historic city centre of Maastricht.
