Job Details

The Biozentrum of the University of Basel is one of the leading institutes worldwide for molecular and biomedical basic research and teaching.

It is home to more than 30 research groups with scientists from over 40 countries. Research at the Biozentrum focuses on the areas of Cell Growth & Development, Infection Biology, Neurobiology, Structural Biology & Biophysics and Computational & Systems Biology.

With its more than 550 employees, the Biozentrum is the largest department at the University of Basel's Faculty of Science.

Description

Infectious diseases are a major worldwide health concern.

Current therapies have become increasingly inefficient because of emerging antimicrobial resistance, while the pipeline of new drugs is drying up.

To avoid a public health emergency, the entire antibiotic research community must work together to reinvigorate research into new antibiotics. The available position will be part of the Innovative Medicines Initiative (http://www.imi.europa.eu/) project ND4BB-Translocation (http://www.translocation.eu) that focuses its efforts on identifying new ways of getting antibiotics into Gram-negative pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli and preventing them from expelling the drugs before they can take effect.

We collaborate with multi-national groups from academia, hospitals, and industry.

Your responsibilities are

To focus on the proteomics of various pathogens under in vitro conditions, in animal models, as well as in human specimens from patients before and during therapy. You will determine the cell envelope structure to better understand antibiotic penetration under relevant in vivo conditions.

Your profile

PhD in one of the following disciplines: microbiology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, biophysics, chemistry, pharmacology, and software engineering. You have a deep interest and preferentially some hands-on experience in proteomics.

We offer you

Our multidisciplinary group includes microbiologists, biochemists, chemists, pharmacologists, and software engineers with expertise in proteomics, multi-color high-speed FACS sorting, confocal microscopy, metabolomics, microbial genetics, and in silico modeling (Nature 440, 303-7; Science 333, 228-33; PNAS 111, 9929-34; Cell 158, 722-33). We also have excellent support from core facilities with expert staff and state-of-the art equipment (including Orbitrap Fusion Lumos and Thermo Q-Exactive HF mass spectrometers and several other instruments; FACSAria, FACS Fortessa; Zeiss LSM 800 Airyscan).
