The University of Sydney is Australia’s first university and enjoys a prestigious reputation internationally. Following the appointment of the previous Dean, Professor Duncan Ivison, to Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), the University is seeking to recruit an exceptional leader for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

The faculty is comprehensive in scope across the humanities and social sciences. With 10,000 students undertaking approximately 70 degree programs, the faculty has the largest student enrolments in the University. Total staff numbers are over 600 (450 academic and 150 professional), with 726 active researchers in the Excellence in Research for Australia 2012 (ERA), including Honoraries and Emeriti, spread over almost 50 departments, centres and programs.

The faculty’s research performance is outstanding. In the most recent national research assessment exercise (ERA 2015), Political Science, Cultural Studies, Literary Studies, Archaeology, Historical Studies, History and Philosophy of Specific Fields, and Philosophy achieved the highest rating of 5 (well above world standard). Research excellence was also recognised at rating 4 (above world standard) in Applied Economics, Anthropology, Sociology, Art Theory and Criticism, Communication and Media Studies, Performing Arts and Creative Writing, and Religion and Religious Studies. No field was assessed at below world standard.

The successful appointee will be an outstanding leader and academic with a distinguished teaching and research record, and will have high level leadership and management skills, including the ability to effectively manage significant budgets and the full range of HR matters. The capacity to think and act strategically and oversee strategy development and implementation is required. Additionally, you will be capable of providing leadership and vision for the academic disciplines of the faculty, accessing your extensive knowledge and national and international networks in arts and social sciences.

You will have demonstrated skills in leading a substantial academic community through large scale, complex change and establishing and sustaining a high achieving, cohesive culture. You must also have the capacity to actively and collaboratively contribute to the work of the University’s Senior Executive Group, and other critical University governance groups as required.

Term and Remuneration

The initial appointment will be for 5 years with the opportunity for renewal subject to assessment of performance. The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package, and will also hold the title of Professor.
