Financial Accountant

The Financial Accounting section within the UCT Finance Department, invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for this permanent position, for appointment 01 July 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The purpose of this position is to ensure timeous and accurate financial reporting at UCT, the integrity and validity of the general ledger master data, efficient financial accounting transaction processing, the maintenance of the Fixed Assets Register and reconciliation to the General Ledger.

Requirements:

• A bachelors’ degree in Accounting or an equivalent tertiary qualification with a minimum of 6 years relevant work experience in financial accounting OR, if qualified by experience, then a minimum of 10 years relevant experience, with the last 7 years being at the same/similar level of responsibility. 
• At least 3 years working knowledge of International Accounting Standards (IAS) 16 and Fixed Assets management.
• A working knowledge of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
• A working knowledge of the VAT Act.
• Proficiency of MS Office at an intermediate to advanced level.
• A working knowledge of SAP or a similar Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) System.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills coupled with sound interpersonal skills.
• Proven people management skills.
• Strong sense of client focus and service orientation.
• Strong organization, planning and administrative skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team, use initiative, and be flexible.
• The ability to co-ordinate, multi-task, work under pressure with meticulous accuracy in a deadline driven environment.

 

Advantageous:

A Post Graduate Diploma/Honours in Accounting and completed articles.

Key performance areas:

• To reconcile the Fixed Assets Register to General Ledger quarterly.
• To prepare year end asset schedules for external auditors.
• To maintain the integrity and validity of the general ledger master data and efficient financial accounting
• transaction processing.
• Completing of monthly Value Added Tax (VAT) returns; and VAT schedules for tax audits.
• Coordinating the preparation of the Notes to the Annual Financial Statements.
• Liaising with the external auditors with respect to the annual audit where required.
• Managing three staff members in the Assets and General Ledgers section.
• Serving as the Deputy Director: Financial Accounting as and when required.
